Yerba Buena Gardens, Great Lawn, Mission Street between 3rd and 4th Streets, San Francisco

Bring your lunch and join us for this FREE performance on the Great Lawn at Yerba Buena Gardens Festival, for a program honoring influential but oft-overlooked African-American women latest cultural extravaganza spearheaded by Bay Area vocalist and culture-keeper, and YBG Festival Seed Commission artist, Michelle Jacques. A New Orleans native, she brings her signature Crescent City style to songs by Blu Lou Barker, Lil Hardin Armstrong, Lizzie Miles and other Black women innovators rarely mentioned as foundational figures in American music. Exploring spirituals, gospel, jazz and the blues via vintage material and original compositions, Michelle brings together a phenomenal cast of musicians, featuring Donna Viscuso, Michaelle Goerlitz, Kevin Scott and Eric Swinderman including powerhouse vocalists Rhonda Crane, and Jay Lamont and Bryan Dyer.

"Hey Chelle, I want to let you know what a fine time we all had checkin' out your show at La Pena last night. As a part-time New Orleans resident (I spend about 1/3 of the year down there and 2/3 in Oakland), and a long-time New Orleans music enthusiast (I've written a book, any number of magazine articles, and I had a long-running show on KPFA a couple of decades ago) I thought I was on top of all important manifestations of New Orleans funk in the Bay Area, but clearly I was wrong about that since I had never known about you before last night. I was really impressed with your set list; a great mix of popular tunes and NOLA obscurities.

Anyway, thanks again for a down-home funky time. Best live music I've heard in months."
